mullitover:

JONATHAN CHERRY: What gets you up in the morning?

LEE TOWNDROW: Making new pictures.

JC: Are there any emerging photographers inspiring you at the moment?

LT: Adam Broomberg and Olivier Chanarin, Jody Rogac, Ben Sandler, Andrew B. Myers

JC: What is your current project all about?

LT: I recently photographed a series of a group of monks in a remote region of northern Argentina. I was taken in by monks at the same monastery 7 years ago while travelling in the area. Among other things, they asked me to play Jesus in a Christmas Eve play they were putting on. I vowed I would return someday, and finally this year I did. I spent some days with them and the younger ones reminded me of 19 year old GI’s who were entering military service. Young men, with great convictions.

JC: What has 2012 got in store for you photographically?

LT: I’ve just moved into a new studio and have a stack of concepts and ideas I’m anxious to work on. There are some ads and magazine assignments coming up, and a project in Brazil.

JC: How do you find juggling personal & commercial work?

LT: Commercial work pays for the personal work. Ad jobs feel the best when you can explore ideas and techniques you were interested in anyway.

JC: Any advice to recent photography graduates?

LT: Ambition is important but you also need patience.

JC: Favourite tree?

LT: Cypress.
